Scion iQ - A Decent Offering for Two

Featured as Scion’s micro-sub compact offering, Scion iQ brings intelligent design and technology to the range of sub compact cars. The smallish length of the car of about 120.1 inch can fit in three passengers with comfort and some decent luggage volume as well.

The Scion iQ features remote keyless entry, power windows, audio control on the steering wheel, USB accessible and iPod ports speak of the standard hardware. The car has 11 airbags for enhanced safety measure. The car sports a fresh look in the available colors of black, white or molten lava orange. Given the small size of the car each curve created supports a function in the car.

Though the car can comfortably fit only three people the arrangement is 3+1 rather than the conventional two in front and two at the back seating, with space for two people on the passenger side and a foldable rear seat. The driver’s seat is placed slightly behind the passenger seat, which might be a reason for concern as the visibility of the driver might be restricted. The seat’s height however cannot be adjusted which might be a shortcoming. Smooth plastic covered armrests and dashboard, leather covered three-spoke tilt enabled steering wheel does create a soothing interior. The iQ has a four speaker CD player installed which make the audio good enough for the sub-compact.

The Scion iQ’s look can be ramped up with a range of accessories available which includes 16 inch alloy wheels, Scion paint protection exterior, mud guard, rear spoiler, and fog lights. For the interiors the car has accessories like floor mats, ashtray bin, lighted door sills, and leather covered shift knobs. Its accessories also feature lowering springs and rear sway bars.

The car sports a 1.3 liter 4-cylinder engine which doesn’t give any whopping horsepower but decent performance for the car of this size to move ahead. It claims a power of 94 horsepower and 89 lb-ft of torque. The car boasts 36 mpg in the city while on a highway drive it can give a 37 mpg of mileage as the car is urban lifestyle oriented. The iQ car features standard Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which makes its performance unattractive for most buyers.

Given its non-exciting power the car is not a favorite of racing enthusiasts but given the sleek look, and small size which is excellent for parking in space squeezed parking areas, this car is a good investment for a comfortable ride. The car isn’t a great ride on the highway due to the short wheelbase, though the considerable width of the car makes it a sturdy feel.

So the car definitely does have a plastic car look which most cars of this segment seem to be afflicted with, but the car loses on competitiveness of the pricing front. The basic model without any accessories is priced at about $16000 and at that amount a car with more space and better features are available. However the car is definitely a good offering with decent features for two people.

Formula Drift Comes of Age

Formula Drift, the first official series of North America, has brought competitive racing to America and is spreading the fever worldwide. This professionally executed and high-powered motor sport where drivers race and skillfully make way through well executed, controlled sideways slides at breakneck speed over a marked track, and has factory backed teams with tuned cars competing in seven championship series in 2011.

Drifting was a known sport of Japan and America was informally introduced to it the 1980’s and 1990’s. Drifting brought about the concept of tuning the car’s engine and internal mechanism to alter its performance. Major modifications practiced in drifting included aftermarket suspension tuning, good tires, and brake tuning. With growing enthusiasm, the Drift Association was formed to create events like Drift Days over the country which opened up a safe training zone for people to gain crucial technique knowledge.

In November 2003 during the SEMA Show, Slipstream Global Marketing announced the advent of a sister company, Formula Drift, Inc., co-founded by Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage to own, operate and launch North America’s official drifting series called Formula Drift. The maiden four-event circuit began in 2004 with a professional attitude to bring the drift experience to American enthusiast.

The 2010 season comprised of seven professional championship events and one Team Drift competition coinciding with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The Formula Drift Asia Championship is an initiative to spread the drift fever globally and is the first Pan-Asia professional drifting championship. The Formula Drift Pro Am Affiliate Network marks the collaboration of various regional level series to reach out to the sport lovers.

Formula Drift has collaborated with the largest number of tire suppliers to a single series which includes BFGoodrich, Cooper, Falken, Hankook, Maxxis, Kenda, NEXEN, Nitto, and Toyo to name a few. These companies provide parts for tuning of the automobiles used in the race. Formula Drift is sponsored by both endemic and non-endemic companies.

Formula Drift judges the performance of teams over technique and execution style rather than speed only. Drivers are given two non-consecutive laps judged to select thirty two drivers for the championship series. Each lap is judged on the criteria of speed, line, angle and overall impression.

Speed Criteria refers to the speed at the first corner and the level maintained by the driver throughout the run. Line refers to the correct way supposed to be taken set by specifications like inner clipping points, outer clipping points and transition zones. Angle refers to the level of counter steer and the rear slip angle used by driver overall in the turn. Overall impression, interestingly, refers to the general feel and crowd enthusiasm and vitality for each driver’s style.

Formula Drift adheres to its strict guidelines and car tuning is reviewed to ensure the spirit of the sport. Formula Drift rules are structured so avoid the practice of overtaking by drivers, with a penalty for the same. Overtaking is allowed when the lead car comes to an abrupt stop of goes off course.

Formula Drift is home to more than sixty professional racers from all over US. Since 2008, Formula Drift is expanding over the globe and is sure to be a big hit worldwide.

D.I.Y. Big Brake Kit

The big brake installation would be a good tuning effort to upgrade the performance of braking abilities. Big Brake Kits come with everything needed to replace the front or rear brakes. High performance big brakes kits normally are limited to the front brakes as they usually are more useful in panic braking, the rear brakes might get lock prematurely which would lead to a loss of control. The equipment provided in the kit include a pair of calipers, rotors, brake lines, brackets, and sets of pads and retaining clips.

The first step is to hoist the front of the car up to remove the wheels easily. Post wheel removal, the brake pad sensor has to be detached followed by unbolting and disconnecting the brake calipers from the car. The calipers have to be removed taking care not to cut off the brake line. Next step is to detach the bracket which holds the caliper to the strut.

Next step is to unscrew the brake disc from the hub. Depending on the model of the car, the anti-lock brake dust shield might need to be removed. Some dust shields are fixed with bolts while others have a press fit on a larger back plate and may require to be cut off using a cut off tool. Beneath the shield lie the ABS sensor and the sensor degree wheel which need to be thoroughly cleaned to remove the dust.

To begin attaching the big brake, the caliper mounting bracket is attached to the strut assembly. The bolts need to be fixed firmly using loctite on the threads to ensure a tight fit. After this the rotor has to be placed over the hub. In most of the kits the rotors are labeled. The brake disc has to be correctly fitted with the hub. The wheel stud holes ought to be aligned perfectly with the brake disc and the spindle. Caution needs to be exercised to ensure a secure fit of the disc to the spindle.

To assemble the pads in the calipers, the pins should be removed. The pads need to be inserted in the calipers and the pins are to be replaced back. Then the caliper is to be mounted over the mounting bracket and the bolts have to be torqued to 37 ft-lb. While mounting the calipers on to the spindle, care has to be taken that the arrow marking direction of the disc rotation should face upwards.

Going forward, one should make sure that the fully mounted wheel faces no interference issue. To go about it, the wheel should be fastened on to the spindle using the lug nuts and the wheel is rotated to make sure it has a free movement without any scraping on the caliper.

After ensuring this, the wheel has to be detached and the new braided brake hose has to be attached to the caliper. The brake line has to be passed through the rubber grommet that holds it to the strut.

Next a flare nut wrench is used to dismember the old rubber hose from the steel hard line. The new line has to be reconnected quickly to avoid brake fluid leakage.

Finally the brake system has to be bled by pushing the brake pedal constantly while releasing the gas bubbles via the bleed screw. Finally the wheels have to fixed back using the lug nuts.

Audi R8 GT for 2012

Audi has created a unique, limited-edition R8 GT for the 2012 MY. This R8 GT expands on the award-winning R8 Coupe and Spyder and represents the apex of performance in the Audi stable. This is the first limited production sports car produced by Audi, and only 333 units will be built worldwide with 90 units shipped to the U.S. Each R8 GT has its production number etched on the gear shift. The R8 GT starting price is a heafty $196,800.

The outstanding performance characteristics of the Audi R8 GT are derived out of a combination of advanced, lightweight materials and increased power. Audi has taken its 5.2 liter V10 and increased output to 560 hp, producing 398 lb-ft of torque and faulting the vehicle from 0-60 in an quick 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 198 mph, and red lining at 8700 rpm. The combination of quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the performance tuned suspension guarantee that the power of the R8 GT is translated to the road, while the R tronic sequential gearbox with paddle shifters produce responsive gear changes.

R8 GT performance is enhanced through the use of carbon fiber and aerodynamic upgrades. The carbon fiber front bumper utilizes aerodynamic flics at the front corners, increasing down force on the front axle, while the stationary carbon fiber rear wing and diffuser increase down force on the rear axle and cut 11.5 lb off the production version R8 V10. Carbon fiber elements are used strategically throughout the car to reduce weight further.

Weight optimization was performed on just about every component and body part, including the battery, air intakes and braking system. The rear hatch has been reworked to save 17.6 lb of vehicle weight. In summary, the R8 GT is about 180 lb lighter than the standard R8 V10.

The matte carbon fiber monoposto cockpit, with precisely placed controls, defines the driver-oriented interior. Alcantara surfaces and appointments are standard on the seats, steering wheel, hand brake, knee pad and headliner, all adorned with a choice of three contrasting stitching colors. Creating a seamless look from outside to inside, exterior color accents have been carried over to the interior.

ASF frame technology makes use of aluminum throughout the body and helps maintain the low, overall weight of the R8 GT. ASF also helps increase vehicle rigidity for improved handling and performance.

While designed for performance, the R8 GT interior also oozes refinement offering available Audi MMI Navigation, automatic air conditioning, and premium sound system.

Of course, extraordinary performance requires a measure of safety, always a priority with Audi. The R8 GT features Electronic Stability Control (ESC), energy absorbing reinforcements in the front and rear and a full complement of air bags. A tire pressure monitoring system helps ensure that owners are warned if pressure falls below a preset threshold.

The new R8 looks to live up to the great reputation that its predessors have established. If you are looking for the next super sports car in the US and have a couple hundred thousand to drop down on a sports car than the Audi R8 might just be the one for you.

What will Danica Do in 2012?

As a professional race car driver, Danica Patrick must make the decision whether or not to become a full-time competitor in NASCAR next year instead of just dabbling in it as she does now.

As a participate, Danica let it be known that driving the Honda/Dallara performance car and leading a number of laps in Sunday's Indianapolis 500 made her even more excited for another crack at it to try and win the prestigious Indy race.

"Every time I've been to Indy it makes me want to be back even more," said Patrick, who in the waning moments of the race led 10 laps only to be forced into pit lane without enough fuel to finish. "I was saying after the race that every time I come and I don't win, I get more mad every time. I think you just realize how close it can be so many times and that's what, I think, makes so many people want to come back to Indy."

During a break at the IndyCar test session at the Milwaukee Mile last week where new aftermarket parts are tested on the race cars, Danica again said she has not made any decision yet on the future of her racing career.

While Patrick's forthcoming NASCAR-or-Indy choice for 2012 has been a hot topic of chatter all season, she could find a way to participate in the Indy 500 while still holding NASCAR the priority of her racing campaign.

Listen to what her major corporate sponsor said about the situation.

In an phone conversation with USA Today, Godaddy.com CEO and founder Bob Parsons stated he expects Danica to participate in next year's Indy 500 as well as drive in the NASCAR circuit on a full-time basis. During a number of recent interviews, Parsons has pledged the company is prepared to back Danica in a move to NASCAR.

Asked Wednesday about Parsons' comments, Danica said only that she's weighing all her options.

"We're just evaluating, and I'm fortunate that I have a great team around me that takes care of a lot of that and allows me to be able to just drive the car," Patrick said. "I don't have to worry about that stuff at this point. Once things get to a critical point where they need my decision-making, that's what we'll do, but I think at this point in time it's still pretty early stages."

The drive continues to be there for Ms. Patrick to win at Indy, especially since she is getting closer each year.

"I'm not the only one that can say that," said Patrick, who became the first woman to lead the Indy 500 in 2005. "Lots of people can say, 'If the strategy would have played out this way, I would have had a chance.' But it's the Indy 500, and it's a game-changer when you win that one."

Danica is not in a rush to make the expected decision, stating that deals of this sort aren't decided until the end of the season. Negotiating normally starts around midseason and continues through to the beginning of the next season.

There are always circumstances to work around, but at the end of the day, what happens is I go to a place where I feel like I have a chance to win, where I'm happy and where I'm enjoying my life," Patrick said. "That's what I feel like helps me perform my best."

And Danica says she's having a ball in her reduced NASCAR Nationwide Series experience.

She came on strong to finish an impressive fourth in the Nationwide race at Las Vegas on March 5. She will return to Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday for her first NASCAR race since crashing at Bristol on March 19.

"It seems like it was about 10 years ago, especially after these last few weeks," Danica said. "My last mile and a half (track) was Vegas, and that was a good result. I don't know if there will be another top-five along the way. That would be wonderful. But I think that for me, it's still sticking with that top-15, I think, is a good goal for me."

On the IndyCar side, Patrick is looking forward to the series' return to Milwaukee on June 19. The iconic track had been taken off the schedule because of past promoters' financial problems.

"I complained like heck that we didn't come here last year," Danica said. "I said to all the people in the series that it's a mistake, that this is the best performance track, I think, for racing for us. There are really two very good grooves here."

Jimmie Johnson Does it Again, Record 5th Consecutive Championships

Participating in the closest contest in NASCAR 'Race for the Chase' history, Jimmie Johnson became the NASCAR Sprint Cup' Champion for an unmatched fifth consecutive season, motoring his Bosch-powered Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. No individual in the history of NASCAR racing has yet achieved this high point until right now. While famous drivers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. Both were 7-time champions, neither garnered this prestigious accolade five years in a row.

With NASCAR’s 2010 Race for the Chase undecided going into the tenth and final “Chase” contest at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Johnson got the better of pit stop miscues to end up runner up to Carl Edwards, confirming his championship points standing. Denny Hamlin entered the competition with a razor-thin fifteen point advantage, but he would draw to a close no higher than 14th; while Kevin Harvick finished third, shy of the points required to overtake Johnson’s total.

Bosch is a long-standing sponsor of Hendrick Motorsports, together with Jimmie Johnson and his teammates Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Bosch provisions purpose-built spark plugs, starters and alternators intended for Hendrick as well as other NASCAR teams, and furthermore provides technical assistance and other support.

Extraordinary evidence of Bosch’s contribution to Johnson’s record achievement lies in the fact that each of the eight Bosch spark plugs in his winning Chevrolet fired faultlessly more than a half-million times all through the course of the 400-mile contest at Homestead-Miami … a testament to Bosch engineering and innovation.

Winning five consecutive Sprint Cup championships is an extraordinary achievement for Jimmie Johnson and the full Hendrick Motorsports organization. It is furthermore a testament to the performance and durability of Bosch auto products.

Wolfgang Hustedt is Motorsports supervisor for Bosch, and he explains the importance of Bosch’s motorsports involvement. “Bosch works personally with Hendrick engineers as well as many others at nearly all levels of motorsports in product and systems development,” he remarks. “There is no tougher proving ground than race tracks in the U.S. And around the globe. Our products are constantly run under the most rigorous conditions viable, and the things we gain knowledge of are, more often than you might think, transferred to OE and replacement parts for everyday passenger vehicles.”

Jimmie Johnson’s Bosch-powered Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet lead him to 23 top ten finishes during the 2010 season, nine of them consecutive. His past performance this year included two poles, six outright wins, and 17 top-five finishes.

Why do you need a AEM programmer?

A programmer is the secret to unlocking the performance potential of your vehicle. You will get your biggest power gain per dollar with a programmer compared to any hard part you might change. And AEM pProgrammers work with almost every cold-air intake package, low-restriction exhaust system and even some aftermarket throttle bodies, so it will maximize your power as you make other modifications to your vehicle.

Since the early 1980s, vehicles have been equipped with engine control management systems, aka computers. The engineers at the automaker have a lot on their minds when they create the calibration for a new vehicle. Believe it or not, maximum horsepower and torque are rarely part of the equation. Sure, they want good horsepower and torque numbers, but they have to calibrate for the least-common denominator, not for the performance enthusiasts. Good enough is…well…good enough.

This leaves a lot of power on the table that AEM can deliver without exchanging a single part on your car or truck. An AEM flash tuner can also deliver fuel savings, if that’s what’s most important to you. And the ability to switch back and forth as you wants.

Why AEM?
What makes AEM the world’s best-selling brand in the segment? Just two things: its products and its people. With 25 years of expertise, AEM delivers quality solutions for people looking for more power, more fuel economy and a variety of customizable features.

Full-line with Niche Expertise
One size does not fit all, and AEM engineers create “tunes” – tailored calibrations – for each niche as if all they did was work on that one type of vehicle. But since AEM works on more types, they’re able to apply benefits that they find from their experience on other vehicles, too. For example, they have a team working to pump up the power on Dodge Cummins trucks and a different team crafting the latest “tune” for Ford Mustangs. They share ideas and passion for great products, but they know the vehicles they work on and the customers who own them better than anyone.

How to install Performance Exhaust

If you're thinking of installing performance exhaust then you've likely researched the features and benefits they can add to an automobile. They’re a good alternative to installing headers for added horsepower, because you can still maintain that factory look under the hood.

Cat back exhaust refers to the exhausts position regarding the catalytic converter. These systems usually use a pipe that is quite a bit larger than stock. Brands such as mangaflow and Gibson exhaust offer such high performance exhaust systems. These can help give your automobile that extra horsepower you're looking for.

Installing a performance exhaust can be done at home. A lot of contemporary exhaust systems do not require you to do any heavy duty welding and if you've had a little experience can be an easy project for any do it yourself enthusiast.

If you're trying to save money you may consider installing exhaust tips. This can be helpful if you've got a problem with rust, or just want to spruce up an old ride. This does not contribute as much to the performance aspect of things, but exhaust tips can be aesthetically pleasing. This is also usually a much cheaper alternative to replacing an entire exhaust system. You'll want to consider the cost of installation and determine what best meets your needs.

If you do a little research you will find that performance exhaust can really enhance a vehicle. Gibson exhaust makes some of the best, and most state of the art exhaust systems out today. But, if you're not looking for a huge performance boost, or want to just improve the looks of an automobile then you should consider installingt tips as an alternative.

Always remember that you are working on the fuel system of the vehicle and act accordingly. Be sure to wear eye protection and be careful when disconnecting the fuel lines. Even after you release the system's pressure, fuel can still fly out when you start removing the injectors.

If your vehicle has a fuel rail, it will need to be removed to get to the injectors. Detach the main fuel line from the rail and unscrew the bolts holding the fuel line in place. Pull the rail away from the injectors. A typical fuel rail is simply pressed into the tops of the injectors so it should be able to easily be pulled off.

If your car doesn't have a fuel rail, there will be a fuel line running from the injector pump to the top of each injector. Carefully remove each of these fuel lines.

Now that you have disconnected the fuel delivery lines, it's time to remove the injectors themselves. The injector will typically be held in place by a spring-like wire. Remove this wire by prying it away from the plug with a flat head screwdriver. Hold on to this wire and reuse it when putting the injectors back into the engine.

Use a fuel injector puller to remove each of the fuel injectors. You can remove them with other tools but a puller is the safest tool to use and is the least likely to cause damage to your engine. If the fuel injectors are in halfway decent shape, they can be reused. Soak them in fuel injector cleaner to clean them off. They may need to be soaked overnight if they are in bad shape.

When you are ready to replace them, reverse the steps you went through to remove them. Lubricate each of the injector seals and replace the injectors, pushing the spring back into place. Be careful not to force them in because this can do serious damage to your engine. Reattach your fuel lines or injector rail and you should be good to go. Make sure you fire up your engine and check for fuel leaks before putting the vehicle back into use.

How to install a Cold Air Intake

Installing a cold air intake is one of the best ways to add performance to any vehicle. Injen Intakes is one of the most popular names in vehicle performance and they offer a wide variety of cold air intake systems for almost any ride on the market today. Cold air intakes add power by reducing restriction and introducing colder, denser air into the engine. This allows the vehicle's computer system to add more fuel and increase the timing to produce more power without any other mods. While a cold air intake won't add monster amounts of power by itself, you can reasonably expect a modest 8% to10% increase in horsepower and torque over stock levels. Although each vehicle has specific installation instructions, a basic cold air intake install should proceed as follows.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable

2. Remove the stock air intake per the vehicle manual

3. Attach the straight coupler hose to the throttle body with the supplied clamp

4. Insert the intake tube into the straight coupler and tighten the clamp just enough to hold the pipe in place.

5. Attach the PCV hose and any sensors removed from the stock intake to the new intake tube.

6. Install the bracket that attaches the air filter to the vehicle.

7. Connect the air filter to the end of the intake tube and tighten the clamp.

8. Attach the air filter to the support bracket.

9. Ensure all clamps and bolts are tightened.

10. Reattach the negative battery cable.

11. Now start the vehicle and take it for a test drive.
Do it yourself Modifications

During a blistering summer day last month while I was in my Honda S2000 rolling to stop at a red light on Highway 1, I hear a removed growl. As the growl gets lounder I see where its coming from. Rolling up next to me at the light is a cherry, purple 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8. The growl of the exhaust is music to my ears. The spotless appearance of the car with its smart lines makes my mouth water for some of that kind of power. What can I say, I'm a adreline junky who is in need of a performance fix. As the light turns green and I see a little puff of smoke out of the Challengers exhaust as it goes flying down the avenue, I decided I needed to do some modifications to my Honda so I can experience the woosh of power when I stump on my gas pedal.

There are many modifications that can be done that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Following is a list of modifications that you can do to your vehicles that won't break the bank. Many of the modifications can be done at home with a little patience and normal household tools. Others will demand finding a reputable garage that you can trust your beloved truck with to do the job properly. So without further adou, here is my list of projects to turn your kitty cat into a lion, King of the jungle:

Air Filters:

The simplest modification that usually will help with acceleration is removing your stock air filter and going with a high flow air filter. Almost any truck will win from this type of air filter, such as K&N air filters from the K&N Company. This is also probably the cheapest mod you can do to your truck. Many high flow air filters claim to add up to 20 more horses. I doubt many cars will see an increase of 20 HP by just adding a high flow air filter, though installing a product such as K&N will most likely improve throttle response. Fuel preservation and smoothness of your truck's engine should also be improved versus using your run of the mill paper or foam filter. Most high flow air filters should run between $30 and $60 dollars. Be aware that using any high performance filter in your car will not void your car's warrantee according to law.

Cold Air Intake:

Putting in a cold air intake is also a relatively simple and inexpensive (in many cases) mod that is beneficial on many cars and can range anywhere from $150-$550. A cold air intake system helps cool the air to your combustion chamber, resulting in more HP and occassionally better gas mileage. There are many companies that make cold air intakes. Some of the more well known intakes are the afe cold air intake, kn air intake and aem air intake. I use an injen intake and it works great adding both power and increased fuel numbers. A short ram intake is another option and is well liked because it stays in a boxed area in the engine bay eliminating the possibility of hydrolock which causes damage to your engine.

Performance Exhaust :

Inadequate exhaust systems are a big problem many vehicles are beleagured with. This can result in stalling, poor acceleration, poor gas mileage, etc. Many emission strict vehicles, especially cars from the late '70s and '80s have exhaust systems that largely restrict air flow, therefore decreasing HP and in many cases causing unnecessary engine wear do to harsh engine back pressure. Switching to a high performance exhaust, including a free flowing catalytic converter is not just a good idea if you have a sports car, but is also a good idea if you want a smoother ride, faster throttle response, and better fuel economy; no matter what type of truck you drive. All exhaust systems are different (such as their sound effects), so make sure you have one installed that suits your needs. There again are many chooses to look at. Some of the popular manufacturers are: Magnaflow, Flowmaster mufflers, Gibson exhaust, Remus, Borla exhaust and Corsa exhaust. Replacing the catalytic converter and muffler should not cost over $400 in most cases (I paid a total of $378 dollars for both parts and installation for my gibson exhaust system.

Upgraded Fuel Injection

Many vehicles will also benefit in acceleration, fuel economy, and better drivability if the fuel injection system is upgraded. Try using a quality fuel injector cleaning solution to unplug stuck fuel injectors. I have upgraded to a Bosch fuel injection system and have noticed a substantial increase in gas mileage (an increase in 3 mpg). I have also noticed a marked increase in acceleration, probably the most competent aftermarket modification I have had performed on my engine. Adding an performance fuel injection system may void your manufacturer's warranty, so make sure you check with your warranty regulations before you undertake/or have someone perform this procedure.

Timing

Advancing your ignition timing beyond the manufacturer's specs is a modification I do not recommend, however many people I have talked to claim that advancing their timing has increased performance dramatically. I add this engine modification to my write-up because of the rave reviews this simple procedure has received, especially among Ford Taurus owners. Make sure you check with a professional mechanic before doing this. This procedure usually takes about 5 minutes, depending of course on your engine. If you do this to your engine, there is a chance your engine will require a higher grade of petrol.

Performance Camshafts:

Aftermarket camshafts are a little bit harder to install than most of the items I have listed, however they can add a substantial measure of horsepower without sacrificing fuel economy. When I had my Toyota Corolla, I had an performance cam put in and it gave me more power than all of the other modifications combined. A good cam also allows your other modifications to work better. If you are not sure about what cam you can go with, talk to your dealer or perferred online store.

Performance Tires

Aside from engine modifications, the tires you use also effect the way your car reacts. Tall tires will most likely give you a smoother ride versus going with a low profile tire. However, if you want better grip, better composure on twisty roads, going with a relatively low profile wide performance tire will give you a more sporty driving experience (this of course is subject to the type of vehicle you own). I use P244550R/19s on my M3 and have experienced a noticeable advancement in the handling department versus my stock tires (P225/55R/18s). When going with a very low profile tire, such as a 35-45 series tire, you are most likely going to feel much more of the pavement, so be prepared to forfeit some comfort if you are going to go the very low profile route. Cost is also an issue here. A low profile performance tire is usually going to cost a good 40%-50% more than your standard tire.

Simple procedures you can do to make your can run better:

Switch to a high quality synthetic oil ,i.e. Mobil 1 and a high quality oil filter.

Use a high quality fuel injector cleaner every month.

Use high quality spark plugs.

Buy gas which contains anti carbon build-up agents.

last Thoughts:

There are a million and one simple projects and procedures you can do to your vehicle to improve its overall performance; whether it be increasing horsepower, increasing fuel economy, or simply giving your car an attitude adjustment. There are also a million and one major mods you can do to your car to increase power dramatically, i.e. using turbo kits, so check out some other reviews in this family. I recommend most of the mods listed above for those looking for better fuel economy (I have increased my fuel economy by 30%), a modest increase in power, and an overall smoother ride.

It was significant in that it shared a platform with the Audi A4 (1995 onwards), using the old school "overhung" longitudinally mounted engineand intake with front-wheel drive. This harked back to the first and second generation Passats, which were based on the Audi 80 (the A4 is an extension of the 80 line).

Styling-wise, the Passat introduced a new design language, first seen on the Concept 1 concept car, for the latest generation of Volkswagens and this was evident with the Mark IV Golf, Bora and Mark IV Polo. The curvy lines, heavily raked windscreens, and smooth underpinnings helped give the B5 Passat an incredibly low coefficient of drag, rated at 0.27 (sedan model). The drag coefficient is less than many sports cars, and even bests the current design of the C6 Chevrolet Corvette, rated at 0.29.
The car featured four-link front suspension, designed to get rid of torque steering. Four-wheel drive was later added as an option, using a Torsen AWD system, which assists obviate loss of traction on slick surfaces. This was the same Torsen AWD system as Audi used in the A4 and A6. Power came from a 1.8L turbocharged 150-hp 4-cylinder engine, or a 2.8L 30-valve 190 hp V6 (not to be confused with the earlier VR6).

The 1.8L engine in the Passat and Audi A4 has a lower oil contentedness than transverse applications of the same engine (4.6 quarts in transverse, 4.3 quarts longitudinal), and may be impaired from oil gunk problems as a consequence, if not changed at regular intervals with full synthetic oils. Two transmission options were available: a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed automatic transmission with tiptronic.

What the Evo has done for Racing

The Mitsubishi Evolution , also known as the Lancer Evo or Evo, is a high-performance sedan manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors. There have been ten official variations to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a roman numeral. All use 2.0L , turbocharged engines and four-wheel drive setup .

The Evolution was earlier intended only for Japanese markets , but demand on the "grey import" market led the EVO series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in assorted European markets since around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market with their Impreza WRX, a direct competitor in other world(a) regions .

The Lancer Evolution is unique among its competitors in the World Rally Championship in that it was a homologated Grouping A car slightly limited to be able to race competitively against, from the 1997 season onwards until the San Remo Rally in 2001, World Rally Car class cars. They were successful in the WRC Rallies from 1996-1999,thanks to the Finn Tommi Mäkinen, for clinching the driver's titles from 1996–1999, and the help of teammate Richard Burns for securing the constructors's championship for the start, and thus far only time in 1998. The Evolution however was replaced in late 2001 by the manufacturer's first World Rally Car, named simply the Lancer Evolution WRC, which lasted in works hands, driven by Makinen, Freddy Loix, Alister McRae and Francois Delecour until Mitsubishi took a sabbatical from the championship at the end of 2002. It was replaced for the 2004 Monte Carlo Rally by the Lancer WRC04. Mitsubishi dropped out of the World Rally Championship after the 2005 season with the Lancer WRC05 still being driven by independants including Italian former works driver Gigi Galli and the Swede, Daniel Carlsson, in the years following. The Lancer Evolution however still competes in the Group N category .

In several European regions , the EVO was offered as the Mitsubishi Carisma Evolution, and indeed to this ensue the works WRC team's second car in the late 1990s, usually driven by Burns and subsequently Loix, was customarily entered as a Carisma GT. Proton Motors of Malaysia raced Evolution III's, Evolution V's (most notable with Proton 1784 where Malaysian driver Karamjit Singh won the 2002 product Car WRC) and an Evolution VII as the Proton Pert in various Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and APAC rally series.

Mitsubishi won the 2009 Australian Manufacturers' Championship with a trio of Evolution X models.

Third Generation Subaru WRX STi

The 2008 STI has been given a higher level of parts to differentiate it from its Impreza WRX brethren. Unlike the Impreza WRX, the STI uses aluminum suspension components, is only available as a 5-door hatchback, and has similiar fenders that are 2.2 in wider. It uses Subaru Intelligent Chassis Design and Dynamic Chassis Control System. The turbo effectively forces air through a bigger top-mount-intercooler which has lost the red "STI" that was on earlier generations. It is the 1st generation of this model with an auto transmission which is able to import to outside Japan (previous generation also had automatic transmission, but was sold only in Japan).

As other 2008 Impreza models, the 2008 car benefits from a lower polar bit of inertia due to smaller overhangs, and in addition features a double wishbone rear suspension. The car also has new intake and exhaust components from the Legacy GT model .

The latest Impreza WRX STI features Multi-mode Driver's Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD), Multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), and Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) with 3 settings : Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp.

The JDM variant has a 2.0L 304 bhp EJ207 engine with a Twin scroll turbocharger, while other versions of the car have a 2.5L 305 bhp EJ257 engine with a single-scroll VF48 turbocharger.

At the New York Auto Show, a Subaru spokesman verified that the Impreza WRC will be based on the hatch platform, due to its lower polar moment of inertia.

The latest US model of the STI has 305 bhp and 290 ft·lbf . of torque and range in price from $35,640 to $39,440, depending on the options selected . The 2008 Impreza STI has the model code GR, which means the different "wide body" 5-door Hatchback compared to the GH stock body 5-door Hatchback used for the 2008 Impreza WRX and non-turbo models. The new "wide body 5-door" chassis is 70.7 in wide compared to 68.5 in for the steady WRX 5-door chassis. Curb weight flunctuates from 3,373 lb to 3,395 lb depending on the options .

In 2008, a Subaru WRX STI spec C was in the works for production. It had been spotted lapping the Nurburgring. It is expected to shed 70 kg in weight, have modest engine tweaks , have an updated aero kit, and bigger brakes.

A possible harbinger to the WRX STI spec C had emerged at the MotorSport Japan 2008 auto show, known as the Subaru Takumi concept. The only visual cues to differentiate this car from the regular STI are a blacked-out rear spoiler, front lip spoiler, and 12-spoke wheels that are strikingly similar to the ones featured on the spec C test mule spotted around the Nurburgring. The upgraded parts included on the car are drivetrain and suspension modifications. There is no word on cognitive operation figures or power output. It was later confirmed by Autoblog that the Takumi concept was in fact just an unveiling of the 20th Anniversary Edition WRX STI and not the spec C. All 300 examples will be exclusive to the Japanese market.

Flashing Headlight Urban Legend, Fact or Fiction?

Urban Lengends come in all shapes and forms but most turn out to be a hoax. A few years ago on a business trip to San Francisco I heard about the urban lengend regarding flashing your headlights and dying. The teller seemed to think it was happening at that time in and around the Bay Point area of town, but that seemed unlikely to me. However, if the story were told in the context of, say, Los Angeles (or even New York, Chicago, Detroit, etc.) it would actually seem sort of plausible. Anyway, here goes:

The story goes that a new gang initiation ritual had become common in the city. The gangbangers pile into a car, usually a older model, with big rims and alot of aftermarket accessories, at night, and drive up and down the streets with their headlights off. The first unsuspecting driver who 'flashes' them with their lights (just to let them know their lights are off, maybe they weren't aware?) becomes their target. The gang members then pursue the samaritan and the would-be initiate must gun him or her down without mercy.

Sounds like a myth, right? But do you suppose there is any bit of truth to this lengend; that perhaps somewhere at sometime some punks did, in fact, use this modus operandi?

The story shook me so much I decided to do some research on the subject when I got home. This is what I found out on the web:

Apart from one or two copycat incidents which may have been inspired by this urban legend (not the other way around), I don't think so. This story has run rampant in virtually every major U.S. city since the early 1990s, sparking public panics and police investigations, but no one has ever documented an actual "gang initiation" incident matching this description in all that time.

It is believed that one of the earliest outbreaks of the rumor (in 1993) may have been inspired by a real-life incident that occured one year before -- the shooting of Stockton, California school secretary Kelly Freed, who was a passenger in an automobile whose driver gestured at a high performance tricked out muscle car full of teenagers to inform them that their headlights were off. Mistaking the hand signal as an insult, one of the teens fired a gun at the car Freed was riding in, killing her. Police determined that none of the youths were gang members, nor was the incident connected with an "initiation rite."

Email versions of what has come to be known as the "Lights Out" legend began appearing in October 1998, possibly inspired by the popular horror film "Urban Legend," in which the apocryphal gang-initiation tale figured prominently. The online alerts resulted in a fresh flurry of freightened inquiries to police departments in cities and towns all over the U.S., many of which were already aware of the rumor by then but lacked the information to either substantiate or disprove it.

In November of that year, John Moore, senior research associate at the National Youth Gang Center based in Tallahassee, stated that to the best of his knowledge the "Lights Out" legend is completely false: "I know of no incident in the country where this type of thing occurred," he told a reporter for the Washington Post. "This is one of the wonders of the Internet, that you can take something that has no basis in fact and make people believe it."

Nevertheless, probably because they fear the possibility of copycat outbreaks, some law enforcement agencies still recommend that motorists play it safe and refrain from flashing their headlights when driving in areas where gang activities are known to occur.

It’s the best thing that ever happened to me in my entire life in the racing world. I have a wife and kid, wonderful things there, but the racing world, this is it.”

Dixon improved his record to 9-0 in final rounds in the Al-Anabi dragster and 4-0 vs. second-place Cory McClenathan this season with a eye-popping 3.786-second pass at 312.28 mph to McClenathan’s 3.810 at 314.17.

“I feel fortunate,” said Dixon, whose engine suffered damage as he crossed the finish line. “When I lifted (off the throttle), it popped … I got heat-treated a little bit … but I saw the win light.”

In Pro Stock, the red-hot Coughlin (6.614 at 208.04) was appearing in his third straight final round in the JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt and he celebrated victory for the second time in that stretch when Auto Club Road to the Future candidate Shane Gray red-lighted in the Tire Kingdom Pontiac GXP to end his bid for his first career win before he got out of first gear.
“This is as close as we’ve been to the points leader all year,” said Coughlin, who will trail Mike Edwards by 40 points when the points reset for the Countdown to 1. “That’s the way the playoff and the Countdown to 1 works. We’ve had that work to our advantage for a couple of years and had that work against us last year. Three or four races ago we were looking at the point and Hector had something like a 160-point lead and we just wrote it off that we wouldn’t make it there. Luck turned to our side, the motorcycle started performing better and Hector faltered a little bit and we capitalized on it.”

The six-race Countdown to 1 playoffs begin in two weeks with the Labor Day weekend running of the world’s most prestigious drag race, the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

What you should really know about your Car Care

Find out about car and truck care truth...what you need to know to maintain your vehicle.

When it comes to caring for your car or truck, knowing the difference between myths and facts may help you conserve your money while keeping your car running longer. Below are some examples:

Myth: Using a higher-octane fuel means better performance.

Fact: Usually, only vehicles with high-performance engines that are tuned high require a higher-octane fuel. Using fuel with an octane rating higher than that of the manufacturer's recommendation will not increase your car's performance, lower exhaust emissions or increase your engine/fuel system life.

Myth: A car's motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles.

Fact: You should follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations for oil changes to keep your warranty current. However, once your vehicle is no longer under warranty, a switch to synthetic oil could extend your oil change intervals. Due to advances in lubrication and filtration technology, many newer cars require a drain interval longer than 3,000 miles.

There are a number of quality synthetic motor oils from which you can choose. Enos, Castro and Royal Purple all have motor oils that are recommended to extend oil change intervals to 12,000 miles under normal driving conditions, and have also been shown to improve fuel economy.

Myth: A dealership must handle all maintenance to keep a vehicle under warranty.

Fact: The key to maintaining your factory warranty is that car care items specified in the owner's manual are serviced on schedule. As long as the service is documented, it can be performed by any auto-repair shop. You can also do the tuning work yourself; just make sure you keep accurate records and receipts in case warranty issues arise and for future repair.

Myth: Dishwashing detergents are suitable for car washing.

Fact: It is common for people to use dish detergents to wash their car. However, it's best to opt for a product specifically designed for automotive use because dish detergents are designed to remove animal and vegetable fats and will target car wax instead.

Myth: All oil filters are the same.

Fact: Inexpensive filters are typically made with the 3,000-mile interval in mind. Often, they can deteriorate rapidly after 3,000 miles. There are a number of new aftermarket, high-performance, premium oil filters on the market from manufacturers such as Injen, Fujita, AEM, S&B Filters, CGS, aFe and K&N. These filters are made for extended oil drain intervals.

For example, Injen uses a proprietary long-life, microglass media that provides protection for 12,000 miles. It also provides an increased level of protection due to the density of the filtration. Injen filters are compatible with all synthetic and conventional oils.

Rental Car Insurance - Safe or Stupid?

You’re in Miami and want to show off. You go down to the exotic car rental shop to pick up a high performance, auto tuned, by the seat of your pants corvette to stroll SouthBeach. When you’re ready to sign the paperwork the guy behind the counter tries to sell you their insurance. To your amazement, the insurance will cost you as much as the rental.

Rental car insurance, is it safe or stupid? The rental car attendant smirks. “Would you like to sign up for a collision damage waiver?” he asks; a glimpse of Don Corleone claiming, “I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse,” flashes by. Is rental car insurance “good business”?

Some sort of rental car insurance is required. A rental car company, personal auto insurer, or credit card company can provide the coverage.

Rental car companies commonly offer basic insurance, such as liability insurance, personal accident insurance, accidental death coverage, and personal effects coverage. The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW [i.e. Optional Vehicle Protection; Loss Damage Waiver]) is their undeclared white elephant. It is an agreement the renter will not be liable nor will they pay for any damage or theft of his or her rented vehicle. Many times, a supplemental liability policy, which protects the renter against retribution from others, is tacked onto the deal. A CDW can be voided by reckless or illegal activity.

CDW sound like a bargain? Maybe, but at an industry average of $9-$19 per day, it is costly. Buying a CDW can easily double the rate of rental. Also, most insurance providers already extend their coverage to rented vehicles; purchasing a CDW is just dumping water in an overflowing moat.

While travel gurus used to classify CDWs as a con artist’s game, frequent travelers, the accident-prone, and the anxious may benefit from a CDW. If someone is renting in a foreign country, a business trip, an extended lease, or has no other applicable auto insurance, he or she may be required to purchase a CDW.

What happens if a vehicle is damaged and it is not covered by rental car insurance? Typically, not only will rental companies charge to cover the damage, but may also charge for profit lost while the auto is out of service and the estimated lowered re-sale value of the car (i.e. “diminution of value”).

Using a credit card company’s insurance as a bastion against rental insurance loan sharking does not guarantee safety. Many credit card companies require rental car companies to reveal their utilization fleet logs, which are commonly regarded as sacrosanct by the rental corporations. Also, credit card insurance is commonly a secondary waiver, which means they won’t pay unless a claim is filed first with the insurance company.

So, is it “good business”? Maybe for the Godfather and the rental car company – but for you? Think again.

Ways to ensure your car is ready for that long trip

Now that the summer is in full swing, your running out of time to get in one last memorable road trip in before the roads become to hazardous. We have created a list of tips to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared for the trip. Whether you drive a high performance, fully tuned aftermarket parts enriched sports car or a family caravan, tuning your auto before you go is a must.

Inspect your vehicle before hitting the road. A basic inspection is not very expensive and will cover the brakes, tires, suspension, lights, cooling system, and other basic drivetrain components. Also, if you have an older vehicle, an air conditioner inspection is also a great idea. You don't want to be driving for hours in the summer with a full load of passengers without air conditioning.

Check your tire pressure before you leave on a road trip. Most tires require between 30-32psi. Don't forget to check the spare tire as well.

If you packed anything on the roof of the vehicle, make sure the majority of the weight is concentrated in the middle of the roof.

Don't pack anything heavy inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Heavy and sharp objects can become projectiles during an accident.

Pack an emergency kit with you. A good emergency kit should include a flashlight, a first aid kit, jumper cables, gloves, rope, and tire inflator.

Always bring extra water. Although you may be traveling on major roads, a flat tire or breakdown can occur miles from the nearest exit. Standing on the side of the highway in the hot afternoon sun can lead to dehydration. Having extra water will help.

If you've never changed a flat tire, perhaps you should try it in the comfort of your own driveway a few days before you head out on your trip. The instructions are in your owner's manual and it only takes a few minutes. Don't wait for an emergency to learn.

While on the road, try to take a 15 minute break every 2 hours. This will keep you alert and fresh.

Pack plenty of entertainment for children. Travel toys and games can help pass the time and reduce the chances of hearing "are we there yet?" every 10 minutes.

Whenever you travel make sure that everyone has proper identification and required documentation. This is especially important when traveling across state and national boarders.

A road trip can be a fun experience.
Tuning in on the Summer, Replace that old tired Rag Top

I remember my first convertible, a dream car, a 1997 BMW Z3. I regularly would take my pride and joy down the streets of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, enjoying the warm sun and cool weather of the California coast. My car always got people’s attention, turning to admire the beautiful lines of my sleek ride. Now that your dream is a reality, you know that maintaining your performance minded convertible is a feature that you may not have anticipated. Your car may be doing just fine but a convertible top can take a beating in the elements. If you have reached a point where replacing your top will extend the life of your vehicle then there are certain steps you can take to not only replace but also to maintain the lifespan of your replacement convertible soft top. Here are four easy steps to consider when you replace your convertible top.

Call a professional Not to discourage you from the beginning, but the truth is that replacing a convertible top is not an easy task. If you want to make sure that the job is done correctly, then you need to get a professional involved. They will know the best types of aftermarket convertible tops to recommend to you for your replacement, how to best remove your old top and how to safely and securely install your replacement. Sometimes this is the last step that people take but it can be beneficial to make it your first step. If you can find a reasonably priced professional installer to help you, then you can save yourself money and time by utilizing their services.

Choose the right style top Whether you decide to call a professional or make this a do-it-yourself tuning project, choosing the right top for your vehicle makes all the difference. The model of your car will dictate whether you need a soft or hard top for your convertible but going with the most advanced materials is what really needs to be done. Choosing a material that has been engineered to handle the elements, from weather to speed to constant up and down adjustments, will make your new top last longer than its predecessor.

Practice Patience Make sure to follow the instructions for replacing your convertible top carefully and do not skip any steps. Rushing the project will only cause future delays. Once you have completed the installation you will need to let the replacement convertible top to set for a minimum of two days. You do this by making sure the top is up for the required setting time.

Clean and maintain In order to extend the life of your new replacement convertible top, you will want to properly take care of it. Sometimes your top's own worst enemy is itself. When it is switching back and forth from up to down, the plastic on the window can rub against itself causing scratches and imperfections. You can avoid this by placing a small fleece cloth over the window once it is down.

In the end, the preparation you make at the beginning of this upgrade will save you much headache in the long run. Remember, it may cost a little more to have a professional assist you but no one wants to spend the money that it will cost to replace your old top twice.

The Art of Performance Drifting

Making you car slide to the left or right (drifting) sounds easy enough but in order to make this happen without the threat of accident and/or injury takes some practice. There are many drifting techniques and styles that are used to get your performance car into a sideways position. Ideally, the driver wants to be in the sideways position as long as possible which is not as easy as it sounds. There is a lot more to drifting than meets the eye. When your car is drifting sideways your natural instinct is to steer counter clockwise to gain control of your car. This is what we were taught in drivers education classes. But to perform properly executed drift maneuvers you want to force your auto to drift sideways. Ideally, you want to over exaggerate your counter steer, resulting in oversteer. This technique will cause the car to turn into another drift. Perform this over and over and you are actually accomplishing the essence of the sport of drifting. You want to stay in a sideways drift for as long as possible in each of your runs. Windy roads such as mountain passes or old country roads make for the best drifting possibilities due to their constant curves. This allows for a continual drift one right after another. Any decent drifter should be able to go into four or five consecutive drifts without ever gaining traction throughout the slide.

Ask a drifter how they accomplish their hair raising drifts and you will probably get as many answers, but getting to the basics of drifting you will be left with two general techniques. The first technique involves popping the clutch. Once you set your car into position with an on-coming turn, you want to disengage the clutch and down shift into 2nd gear. While this is happening, you want to increase your RPM's to about 4000 - 5000 (Each vehicle is tuned different, but 4000 – 5000 is in general a good position to be in), and you want to start steering away from the turn. Now, at the same time engage or pop your clutch and steer hard away from the turn. The result should be that your back wheels begin spinning. The trick is to keep your back wheels from gaining traction and at the same time staying in control by steering the front wheels and working the accelerator and clutch. You might have to engage the clutch a couple times before the next turn.

The second technique is for FWD cars and it uses the e-brake handle to force the drift. Not as popular for the rear-wheel drive drifters, but a must for front-wheel drive cars. The driver must see farther down the road and position himself precisely coming into the turn. Once the driver starts turning, they pull up the e-brake causing loss of traction on the rear wheels. Make sure your brakes are in good working order before you attempt this technique. The feeling is a bit different than the RWD's and you slow down a lot quicker, but it's about the only way for a FWD drifter. It is very difficult to maintain a smooth drift especially when there are multiple turns one right after another.

There are many aftermarket accessories that can be installed in your car to help the avid drifter perform at the top of their game. Just be sure your equipment is in tip top shape before trying any drifting moves. Check your seat and seat harness to ensure you stay in place. Tuning your car for drifting is essential. Your car will take a beating especially on the suspension and brakes.

2010 Accessory Friendly Vehicles as chosen by SEMA

Although the 2010 SEMA is by the way side, the members of the Specialty Equipment Market Association continue to research and do whatever else they do when not preparing for the greatest car show of all time.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro leads the way as the most accessory-friendly car, earning its position with its reasonable sticker price, which should leave plenty of cash in your pocket for the many styling accessories, such as cold air intakes and high performance exhausts for the retro futuristic body and performance accessories for its mod-friendly LS series V-8 engine.

In the trucks category the Ford F-Series Super Duty was the winner, which isn’t surprising considering the broad range of available power trains and an almost endless stream of accessories for both work and play. In the SUV category, the Toyota 4Runner racks up a win, partially because it is one of the last mass-produced true off-roaders available today and there’s a pretty big market for accessories that let you play in the dirt.

Finally, SEMA chose the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid for the hybrid category-because, let’s face it folks just aren’t modding Priuses in a major way. Plus, the Silverado Hybrid has access to most of the styling and performance accessories of the conventional Silverado.

So, what do you think?
My First Car, Pontiac Fiero

1984 was a good year. Two years removed from High School, managing my own store and ready to purchase my very first car. It had to be a special car. I wasn’t interested in having a cookie cutter GM auto but also couldn’t afford a fine European car. Then out of the blue came a car by Pontiac that broke the mold of the everyday GM car and was priced well below the Euro muscle. The Pontiac Fiero. It only came in white and black but was so radical in looks that I knew I had found the car for me.

The Fiero was designed by Hulki Aldikacti as a Pontiac sports car. GM Higher Ups didn’t care too much for the car and didn’t want to infringe on their flagship sports car, the Corvette, so they categorized it as a fuel-efficient commuter car. The public, however, had other ideas for the only mid-engine car ever mass produced in North America. The Fiero was also the first and only two seater Pontiac ever made until the 2006 introduction of the Pontiac Solstice. The Fiero was modified slightly, borrowing many parts, into a performance vehicle. The sports car potential of this car was greatly reduced due to cost-cutting however and came under fire from critics. Its publicity did not match its initial performance. By the end of production, the Fiero had received updated suspension and body styling, but kept a limited offering of engines. The use of turbochargers or the newer DOHC straight-4 engines never made it to production. Officially, production ended because of insufficient profits. I believe if given the green light, Pontiac developers could have created a beast of a car that would have out-performed the Corvette and cut into the profits and reputation that Chevrolet held so dear for many years.

The Fiero has a strong following of Modifiers and Tuners today. Because of an abundance of replacement parts available from other General Motors vehicles and several aftermarket parts, there are many upgrades that can be done to improve performance and reliability of the cars. Additionally, a whole host of different General Motors engines have been installed by enthusiasts, from the Quad-4 engine to the Chevrolet small-block V8.

The Fiero 2M4 was on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1984. The 1984 Fiero was the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 for 1984, beating out the new 1984 Corvette for the honor.

Though I no longer have my 1984 white Pontiac Fiero, I have fond memories of my time with my little car. Every once in awhile I see a nice clean 2M4 zip by me on the street and it makes me think back to my youth.

Differences between turbochargers and superchargers

Let's start with the similarities. Both performance turbochargers and superchargers are called forced induction systems. They compress the air flowing into the engine. The benefit of compressing the air is that it lets the engine push more air into the cylinder. More air means that more fuel can be pushed in too, resulting in additional power from each explosion in each cylinder. A turbo/supercharged engine generates more power overall than the same engine without the supercharger.

The usual boost provided by either a turbocharger or a supercharger is 6 to 8 pounds per square inch (psi). Since normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi at sea level, you can see that you are getting about 50-percent more air into the engine. Therefore, you would expect to get 50-percent more power. It's not absolutely efficient, though, so you might get a 30-percent to 40-percent improvement instead.

The key differentiation between a aftermarket turbocharger and a supercharger is its power supply. Something has to provide the power to run the air compressor. In a supercharger, there is a belt that connects directly to the engine. The supercharger gets its power the same way that the water pump or alternator does. A turbocharger, in contrast, gets its power from the exhaust stream. The exhaust runs through a turbine, which spins the compressor.

There are advantages in both systems. In theory, a turbocharger is more efficient because it is using the "wasted" energy in the exhaust stream for its power source. On the other hand, a turbocharger causes some amount of back pressure in the exhaust system and tends to provide less boost until the engine is running at higher RPMs. Superchargers are easier to install but tend to be more expensive.

Both, turbochargers and supercharges will give the anemic engine the added horsepower and torque that most enthusiasts are looking for from their auto. Both will require professional installation and tuning of the vehicles on board computers from keep the check engine lights from coming on.

Ideas for Tuning your Ride

Car modifications can enhance the look and power of any vehicle on the road. Here is a list of things to think about before modifying your new car:

Make sure the car modifications you are planning do not void the existing warranty on the automobile.

Only use proven, recommended aftermarket parts which are covered by their own warranty.

Don't choose aftermarket parts based on their affordability. Cheap parts can lead to expensive repairs.

Try to stick with one brand for powertrain modifications. This will ensure everything works properly and efficiently.

If you are replacing existing components which are still in good shape, such as an exhaust or rims, ask for them back so that you can resell them. You mechanic will resell them so you might as well try for yourself.

Don't modify your car thinking of it as an investment. You'll rarely get the money back that you put into it. Do it to have fun.

Let your insurance company know you will be modifying your car. They may refuse any claims you make regarding a collision or stolen goods if you do not check with them first.

If you are leasing your vehicle, you may be unable to modify it. Check with your leasing company first.

Ensure that all modifications are street legal and safe.

If your car modifications attract a lot of attention, install a good quality alarm system.

Car modifications can increase power, efficiency, and the looks of your vehicle. Try to use common sense and remember to drive safely.

What to look for in Brake Rotors

No one would argue that your brakes are one of the most important components on your vehicle. When it comes to stopping on a dime under performance or harsh driving conditions, a solid set of performance brakes is a must. Quality brakes feature rotors that are drilled, slotted or both. But which is better?

To understand that, the first thing you should consider is what the addition of a set of performance brake parts means in terms of stopping power. Slotted rotors are one of the biggest contributors when it comes to the increased stopping power, which is why they're found on almost every racecar from Laguna Seca to Nurburgring. This feature allows a more rapid cooling of the braking surface for increased performance and added bite. And, in wet weather, they channel water away from the braking surface by allowing it to pass more freely through the holes. This not only adds to the overall performance, but it also prevents the dangerous loss of braking power that comes with waterlogged brakes. You get maximum stopping ability no matter how wet the terrain. In addition to performance, slotted rotors are cross-drilled and fill more of the space behind the wheel to provide a tougher, filled-in look.

When deciding which is best for you, consider fade characteristics, pedal feel and lining wear. It goes without saying that performance-grade rotors, like Integra rotors, Acura TL rotors or RSX rotors, are far superior to their stock counterparts. But exactly how much better are they? Well, fade tests have shown a 37 percent better brake output for drilled rotors over slotted parts, with the drilled rotor brake operating about 150 degrees cooler.

Pedal force was also reported to be far more consistent with drilled rotors across the entire brake temperature range. In other words, the driver doesn’t need to apply additional force to achieve a stop when the brakes operate at higher temperatures. This provides additional safety through added brake response and also helps reduce driver fatigue.

Finally, one of the most important things to consider is lining wear. Slotted rotors weren’t able to keep up in this category either, with tests showing 20 percent more wear on pads with slotted rotors than their drilled counterparts. One possible solution is to pair a set of slotted rotors with a set of performance brake pads. Designed to withstand the rigors of high-output racing, performance-grade brake pads provide a direct replacement for stock pads and surpass their lesser counterparts in durability by 20 - 40 percent. They’re actually proven to last longer, stop faster and are virtually noise-free.

So, basically: are you racing or driving on city streets? Slotted rotors, like those produced by StopTech or RacingBrake, are shown to help in the efficient removal of gas, water and debris from under the pad. But, depending on where you’re driving, these conditions may not be present in your everyday commute. This would make drilled rotors, currently found on the Corvette, Ford GT, Porsche, Mercedes and BMW, the better choice for city streets and freeways.

How to pick a Quality Auto Parts Site

Today, people are looking for quality auto parts that are capable of increasing their fuel efficiency and vehicle performance. Prices continue to rise on OEM parts at your local car dealership across the America. Whether you live in Boston, San Francisco, Detroit or Seattle one should always look to an aftermarket part alternative. They are readily available and are normally priced less than OEM parts.

Many sites have popped up selling aftermarket parts. The consumer is at the mercy of sifting through pages and pages of parts. Not all sites are the same. Many are out to make a profit without any consideration of the customer. Once you find a site that you like, call and speak to their customer service to see if they know anything about what they are selling. When you find a site you trust, stick with it.

An automotive directory is a very important companion for any person who is interested in the information and news relating to the benefit of best automotive parts.
Survey Reveals Technicians' 'Top 10 List' of Neglect

Changing the oil and filter is the most frequently neglected service by car owners, according to a survey of ASE-certified automotive mechanics conducted by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

The ASE survey asked mechanics to list the auto maintenance that their customers most frequently neglect. From this survey, ASE compiled a Top Ten List of Vehicle Neglect.

Although changing the oil and oil filter was the most frequently neglected service at 21.7 percent, neglecting the cooling system, belts and hoses was a close second, listed by 19 percent of technicians.

Transmission neglect (12.3 percent) and neglecting periodic maintenance schedules (10.3 percent) also rated high among the mechanics.

"What this survey shows is that the least expensive and least time-consuming routine maintenance is being overlooked by today's car owners," said Ronald Weiner, ASE president. "Automobile neglect can be costly. Serious problems and expensive repairs often result when car owners don't check and change engine oil and coolant/antifreeze in the radiator, or replace worn belts and hoses."

Mechanics also listed other auto maintenance items that are frequently neglected: tune-ups, 8.7 percent; tires, 8.5 percent; suspension and steering, 8.2 percent; brakes, 7.7 percent; timing belts, 2.4 percent; and body/paint work, 1 percent.

Since the complexity of today's new cars and light trucks limits the maintenance and service the average do-it-yourselfers can perform, ASE advises vehicle owners to take their vehicle to a repair facility that employs ASE-certified technicians for periodic checkups. Car owners should follow the recommended service schedules in the owner's manual.

ASE, a national, nonprofit organization, was founded in 1972 to help improve the quality of vehicle service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians.

Learn How to Communicate For Better Auto Service

Even though today's vehicles have on-board computers that "talk" to the diagnostic equipment found in many modern repair facilities, the first line of defense is still communication between customer and service writer or technician. Here are some tips from the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) on ways to communicate effectively at repair shops: Do your homework before taking your vehicle in for repairs or service: Read the owner's manual to learn about the vehicle's systems and components. Follow the recommended service schedules; keep a log of all repairs and service. Use all of your senses to inspect your car for: Unusual sounds, odors, engine drips, leaks, exhaust smoke, warning lights, gauge readings. Worn tires, belts, hoses. Changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels. Problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations. Note when the problem occurs: When did the problem first start? Is it constant or periodic? When the vehicle is cold or after the engine has warmed up? At all speeds? Under acceleration? During braking? When shifting? Once you are at the repair shop: Be prepared to describe the symptoms you are experiencing but do not suggest a specific course of repair. Do not be embarrassed to ask questions, unless you’re a mechanic yourself, you probably don’t know the answers so its your right to know what is going on with you car. Don't expect an on-the-spot diagnosis, but ask to be apprised of the problem, course of action and costs before work begins.

Cold Air Intakes, the first mod for the tuner

While a car/truck moves, it produces a wind that can be felt if you open the window or sunroof of the car/truck. The wind can feel very cold if it is the winter season and you will want to quickly roll up the window so that you don't freeze. On the other hand if the weather is cool or even warm but not hot, you will enjoy the breeze and will want to leave the windows down. As a passenger we sometimes like the breeze getting in from the outside and sometimes we don't.

Now think of a small window that allows cold air from the outside to get to your car engine's cylinder block. The engine cylinder is where the combustion takes place and the fuel is exploded. Of course it cannot have a window, but it can have an air intake that brings in cold air. So how would the engine react on receiving the cold air? Would it feel cold and lose heat and therefore its performance as you do on a cold day or would it be invigorated and recharged and deliver better performance as you would when the weather is enjoyable?

Well the engine would not feel cold. A lot of heat is generated in the engine and its good idea to help cool it down. To be honest, it would feel more invigorated if a cold air intake took cold air to it. This is because for a given volume more air can be contained in it if it is cold. That is because cold air is denser compared to hot air. More air contains more oxygen which leads to a better combustion.

Better air combustion gives you more horsepower and torque since more fuel is burnt in the engine stroke. You will also get better fuel efficiency since a smaller amount of fuel is left un-burnt. The air intake also looks more attractive on your car than the stock unit giving it a performance car look. You can see cold air intakes are a cool product that gives you great value. There are many aftermarket manufactures that build cold air intakes and short ram intakes. Such brands are Injen, Fujita, AEM, Airaid and aFe.
