Be sure to wear eye protection and be careful when disconnecting the fuel lines. Even after you release the system's pressure, fuel can still fly out when you start removing the injectors. <img vspace="8" align="left" width="320" height="216" alt="" src="/userfiles/images/fuel%20injectors.jpg" /><o:p> </o:p>If your vehicle has a fuel rail, it will need to be removed to get to the injectors. Detach the main fuel line from the rail and unscrew the bolts holding the fuel line in place. Pull the rail away from the injectors. A typical fuel rail is simply pressed into the tops of the injectors so it should be able to easily be pulled off. <o:p> </o:p>If your car doesn't have a fuel rail, there will be a fuel line running from the injector pump to the top of each injector. Carefully remove each of these fuel lines.<o:p> </o:p>Now that you have disconnected the fuel delivery lines, it's time to remove the injectors themselves. The injector will typically be held in place by a spring-like wire. Remove this wire by prying it away from the plug with a flat head screwdriver. Hold on to this wire and reuse it when putting the injectors back into the engine.<o:p> </o:p>Use a fuel injector puller to remove each of the <a target="_parent" href="http://www.autotuningstore.com/Agency_Power_Fuel_Injectors--category--743.html" name="fuel_injectors">fuel injectors</a>. You can remove them with other tools but a puller is the safest tool to use and is the least likely to cause damage to your engine. If the fuel injectors are in halfway decent shape, they can be reused. Soak them in <a name="fuel_injector_cleaner">fuel injector cleaner</a> to clean them off. They may need to be soaked overnight if they are in bad shape. <o:p> </o:p>When you are ready to replace them, reverse the steps you went through to remove them. Lubricate each of the injector seals and replace the injectors, pushing the spring back into place. Be careful not to force them in because this can do serious damage to your engine. Reattach your fuel lines or injector rail and you should be good to go. Be prepared for a more aggressive sound from under the hood since cold air intakes don't muffle the engine sound like a stock intake.</div> http://www.autotuningstore.com/How_to_install_a_Cold_Air_Intake--post--26.html Do it yourself Modifications During a blistering summer day last month while I was in my Honda S2000 rolling to stop at a red light on Highway 1, I hear a removed growl.  As the growl gets lounder I see where its coming from.  Rolling up next to me at the light is a cherry, purple 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8.  The growl of the exhaust is music to my ears.  The spotless appearance of the car with its smart lines makes my mouth water for some of that kind of power.  What can I say, I'm a adreline junky who is in need of a performance fix.  As the light turns green and I see a little puff of smoke out of the Challengers exhaust as it goes flying down the avenue, I decided I needed to do some modifications to my Honda so I can experience the woosh of power when I stump on my gas pedal.  There are many modifications that can be done that won't cost you an arm and a leg.  Following is a list of modifications that you can do to your vehicles that won't break the bank.  Many of the modifications can be done at home with a little patience and normal household tools.  Others will demand finding a reputable garage that you can trust your beloved truck with to do the job properly.  So without further adou, here is my list of projects to turn your kitty cat into a lion, King of the jungle:<a name="Air_Filters">Air Filters</a>:The simplest modification that usually will help with acceleration is removing your stock air filter and going with a high flow air filter. Almost any truck will win from this type of air filter, such as K&N air filters from the K&N Company. This is also probably the cheapest mod you can do to your truck. Many high flow air filters claim to add up to 20 more horses. I doubt many cars will see an increase of 20 HP by just adding a high flow air filter, though installing a product such as K&N will most likely improve throttle response. Fuel preservation and smoothness of your truck's engine should also be improved versus using your run of the mill paper or foam filter. Most high flow air filters should run between $30 and $60 dollars. Be aware that using any high performance filter in your car will not void your car's warrantee according to law.<a name="Cold_Air_Intake">Cold Air Intake</a>:Putting in a cold air intake is also a relatively simple and inexpensive (in many cases) mod that is beneficial on many cars and can range anywhere from $150-$550. A cold air intake system helps cool the air to your combustion chamber, resulting in more HP and occassionally better gas mileage. There are many companies that make cold air intakes.  Some of the more well known intakes are the <a target="_parent" href="http://www.autotuningstore.com/aFe_Stage_2_Cold_Air_Intakes--category--831.html">afe cold air intake</a>, kn air intake and aem air intake.  I use an injen intake and it works great adding both power and increased fuel numbers.  A short ram intake is another option and is well liked because it stays in a boxed area in the engine bay eliminating the possibility of hydrolock which causes damage to your engine.<a name="Performance_Exhaust">Performance Exhaust </a>:Inadequate exhaust systems are a big problem many vehicles are beleagured with. This can result in stalling, poor acceleration, poor gas mileage, etc. Many emission strict vehicles, especially cars from the late '70s and '80s have exhaust systems that largely restrict air flow, therefore decreasing HP and in many cases causing unnecessary engine wear do to harsh engine back pressure. Switching to a high performance exhaust, including a free flowing catalytic converter is not just a good idea if you have a sports car, but is also a good idea if you want a smoother ride, faster throttle response, and better fuel economy; no matter what type of truck you drive. All exhaust systems are different (such as their sound effects), so make sure you have one installed that suits your needs.  There again are many chooses to look at.  Some of the popular manufacturers are: Magnaflow, Flowmaster mufflers, <a target="_parent" href="http://www.autotuningstore.com/Gibson_American_Muscle_Car_Dual_Muffler_Replacement--category--893.html">Gibson exhaust</a>, Remus, Borla exhaust and Corsa exhaust.   Replacing the catalytic converter and muffler should not cost over $400 in most cases (I paid a total of $378 dollars for both parts and installation for my gibson exhaust system.Upgraded <a name="Fuel_Injection">Fuel Injection </a>Many vehicles will also benefit in acceleration, fuel economy, and better drivability if the fuel injection system is upgraded. Try using a quality fuel injector cleaning solution to unplug stuck fuel injectors.  I have upgraded to a Bosch fuel injection system and have noticed a substantial increase in gas mileage (an increase in 3 mpg). I have also noticed a marked increase in acceleration, probably the most competent aftermarket modification I have had performed on my engine. Adding an performance fuel injection system may void your manufacturer's warranty, so make sure you check with your warranty regulations before you undertake/or have someone perform this procedure.TimingAdvancing your ignition timing beyond the manufacturer's specs is a modification I do not recommend, however many people I have talked to claim that advancing their timing has increased performance dramatically. I add this engine modification to my write-up because of the rave reviews this simple procedure has received, especially among Ford Taurus owners. Make sure you check with a professional mechanic before doing this. This procedure usually takes about 5 minutes, depending of course on your engine. If you do this to your engine, there is a chance your engine will require a higher grade of petrol.Performance <a name="Camshafts">Camshafts</a>:Aftermarket camshafts are a little bit harder to install than most of the items I have listed, however they can add a substantial measure of horsepower without sacrificing fuel economy. When I had my <a target="_blank" href="http://www.autotuningstore.com">Toyota Corolla</a>, I had an performance cam put in and it gave me more power than all of the other modifications combined. A good cam also allows your other modifications to work better. If you are not sure about what cam you can go with, talk to your dealer or perferred online store.Performance TiresAside from engine modifications, the tires you use also effect the way your car reacts. Tall tires will most likely give you a smoother ride versus going with a low profile tire. However, if you want better grip, better composure on twisty roads, going with a relatively low profile wide performance tire will give you a more sporty driving experience (this of course is subject to the type of vehicle you own). I use P244550R/19s on my M3 and have experienced a noticeable advancement in the handling department versus my stock tires (P225/55R/18s). When going with a very low profile tire, such as a 35-45 series tire, you are most likely going to feel much more of the pavement, so be prepared to forfeit some comfort if you are going to go the very low profile route. Cost is also an issue here. A low profile performance tire is usually going to cost a good 40%-50% more than your standard tire.Simple procedures you can do to make your can run better:Switch to a high quality synthetic oil ,i.e. Mobil 1 and a high quality oil filter.Use a high quality fuel injector cleaner every month.Use high quality spark plugs.Buy gas which contains anti carbon build-up agents.last Thoughts:There are a million and one simple projects and procedures you can do to your vehicle to improve its overall performance; whether it be increasing horsepower, increasing fuel economy, or simply giving your car an attitude adjustment. Urban Lengends come in all shapes and forms but most turn out to be a hoax.  A few years ago on a business trip to San Francisco I heard about the urban lengend regarding flashing your headlights and dying.  The teller seemed to think it was happening at that time in and around the Bay Point area of town, but that seemed unlikely to me. However, if the story were told in the context of, say, Los Angeles (or even New York, Chicago, Detroit, etc.) it would actually seem sort of plausible. Anyway, here goes:The story goes that a new gang initiation ritual had become common in the city. The gangbangers pile into a car,usually a older model, with big rims and alot of aftermarket accessories, at night, and drive up and down the streets with their headlights off. The first unsuspecting driver who 'flashes' them with their lights (just to let them know their lights are off, maybe they weren't aware?) becomes their target. The gang members then pursue the samaritan and the would-be initiate must gun him or her down without mercy.Sounds like a myth, right? But do you suppose there is any bit of truth to this lengend; that perhaps somewhere at sometime some punks did, in fact, use this modus operandi?The story shook me so much I decided to do some research on the subject when I got home.  This is what I found out on the web:Apart from one or two copycat incidents which may have been inspired by this urban legend (not the other way around), I don't think so. There are many drifting techniques and styles that are used to get your performance car into a sideways position. Ideally, the driver wants to be in the sideways position as long as possible which is not as easy as it sounds. There is a lot more to drifting than meets the eye. When your car is drifting sideways your natural instinct is to steer counter clockwise to gain control of your car. This is what we were taught in drivers education classes. But to perform properly executed drift maneuvers you want to force your auto to drift sideways. Ideally, you want to over exaggerate your counter steer, resulting in oversteer. This technique will cause the car to turn into another drift.  Perform this over and over and you are actually accomplishing the essence of the sport of drifting.  You want to stay in a sideways drift for as long as possible in each of your runs.  Windy roads such as mountain passes or old country roads make for the best drifting possibilities due to their constant curves.  This allows for a continual drift one right after another. Any decent drifter should be able to go into four or five consecutive drifts without ever gaining traction throughout the slide.<div>Ask a drifter how they accomplish their hair raising drifts and you will probably get as many answers, but getting to the basics of drifting you will be left with two general techniques. The first technique involves popping the clutch. Once you set your car into position with an on-coming turn, you want to disengage the clutch and down shift into 2nd gear.  While this is happening, you want to increase your RPM's to about 4000 - 5000 (Each vehicle is tuned different, but 4000 – 5000 is in general a good position to be in), and you want to start steering away from the turn.  Now, at the same time engage or pop your clutch and steer hard away from the turn.  The result should be that your back wheels begin spinning.  The trick is to keep your back wheels from gaining traction and at the same time staying in control by steering the front wheels and working the accelerator and clutch. The Fiero was modified slightly, borrowing many parts, into a performance vehicle.  The sports car potential of this car was greatly reduced due to cost-cutting however and came under fire from critics. Its publicity did not match its initial performance.  By the end of production, the Fiero had received updated suspension and body styling, but kept a limited offering of engines. The use of turbochargers or the newer DOHC straight-4 engines never made it to production. Officially, production ended because of insufficient profits. I believe if given the green light, Pontiac developers could have created a beast of a car that would have out-performed the Corvette and cut into the profits and reputation that Chevrolet held so dear for many years.</div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"> </div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">The Fiero has a strong following of Modifiers and Tuners today. Both performance turbochargers and superchargers are called forced induction systems. They compress the air flowing into the engine.  The benefit of compressing the air is that it lets the engine push more air into the cylinder.  More air means that more fuel can be pushed in too, resulting in additional power from each explosion in each cylinder. A turbo/supercharged engine generates more power overall than the same engine without the supercharger.<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">The usual boost provided by either a turbocharger or a supercharger is 6 to 8 pounds per square inch (psi).  Since normal atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi at sea level, you can see that you are getting about 50-percent more air into the engine. Transmission neglect (12.3 percent) and neglecting periodic maintenance schedules (10.3 percent) also rated high among the mechanics. "What this survey shows is that the least expensive and least time-consuming routine maintenance is being overlooked by today's car owners," said Ronald Weiner, ASE president. "Automobile neglect can be costly. The engine cylinder is where the combustion takes place and the fuel is exploded.  Of course it cannot have a window, but it can have an air intake that brings in cold air. So how would the engine react on receiving the cold air? Would it feel cold and lose heat and therefore its performance as you do on a cold day or would it be invigorated and recharged and deliver better performance as you would when the weather is enjoyable? Well the engine would not feel cold. A lot of heat is generated in the engine and its good idea to help cool it down. To be honest, it would feel more invigorated if a cold air intake took cold air to it. This is because for a given volume more air can be contained in it if it is cold. That is because cold air is denser compared to hot air. More air contains more oxygen which leads to a better combustion. Better air combustion gives you more horsepower and torque since more fuel is burnt in the engine stroke.  You will also get better fuel efficiency since a smaller amount of fuel is left un-burnt. The air intake also looks more attractive on your car than the stock unit giving it a performance car look.
